Man Rei is the ongoing project of Estonian-born artist Kristin Reiman (they/them). As Man Rei, they meld fragmented lyrics, mangled voices, smeared samples and hazy guitar loops into foggy walls of sound. Reiman’s Man Rei alias runs tangentially to their art practice, where they use sound, speech, and writing to explore the discomfort and malaise of human consciousness through various uncanny outputs. The beautifully spacious ‘Intermission’ from ‘Thread’ was originally written for Reiman’s 2019 opera ‘The Drowse or the Age of Constant Fatigue’. Over the past 6 years, the sound of Man Rei has been shaped through a string of privately released cassettes and limited tape editions on labels including Somewhere Between Tapes and Crash Symbols. These years of oblique explorations in songwriting accumulate in ‘Thread’, their debut LP for Somewhere Press. It’s a sound stripped to its core, where luminous tendrils of feather-light whispers meet distant echoes before fading into mist.
Leo Chang’s and Iara Perillo’s collaboration features an improvised live set of ambient electronic music, combining live audio processing of alto flute, vocal sounds, traditional Korean double reed instruments and gongs. Expect unprecedented and colorful soundscapes, in which traditional instruments come together with live electronics, resulting in a performance created especially for this occasion. Chang’s and Perillo’s improvisation intersects tradition and modernity with ancient, folk-based sounds, finding new life through contemporary electronics and experimental techniques. A unique combination of the timeless dialogue between cultural heritage and innovation––leading to a sonic performance that is both reflective and progressive.
